History:

Mentoring Youth Program 2000-2008

The Mentoring Youth Program was designed to help selected youth between the ages of 16 and 21 in out-of-home placement or experiencing other difficult life challenges, make their vision of becoming successful and contributing members of society a reality.  The program was intended to:

* Give disadvantaged teens an opportunity to succeed their potential.
* Provide resources for continued education and career development.
* Integrate partnerships which foster growth and development in the community.

Youth Development is a process through which young people enter adulthood.  All youth have the same basic developmental needs, and they all attempt to meet these needs.

These needs are:

  1. Belonging and membership
  2. Self-worth and the ability to contribute
  3. Self-awareness and the ability to reflect and assess
  4. Independence and control over their life
  5. Closeness with at least one adult
  6. Competence and mastery
